. legend has it that richard nixon heard that jfk was not going to get makeup from cbs for that debate, and so nixon said, well, i won't have any makeup either, then. even though he was running a 102 degree fever and not only was nixon ill that day, it turned out that when jfk turned down the cbs makeup offer, it was because he apparently had his own makeup arrangements already made. and so we got jfk with makeup and no fever, we got richard nixon with no makeup and a fever. what we got on tv in the first televised presidential debate in our nation's history was beauty and the beast. right? of course, jfk went on to win that election that year, whether or not it was because of the debate, i don't know, but thus was born the entire school of punditry that says it's all about the optics and watching things with the sounds off and all that existentially exhausting stuff we still say today. but here is the relevant context for understanding what happened last night. when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we ha

"cbs this morning" has that story. norah o'donnell joins us live from northwest washington with a preview. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey good morning mike and jessica. you mentioned it. president obama tries to fight back after being slammed for his debate performance. but he may have to deal with disappointing news about jobs today. most economists expect the slight increase in the unemployment rate today. plus, big bird where you least expect him from late night to social media. how the 43-year-old 8'0" tall creature is stealing the political spotlight. we're all having some fun on this friday. we'll see you right at 7:00. >>> you can't not love big bird. don't pick on big bird. thanks. >> that's right. >>> well, we're just one month into the school year and there is a nasty problem inside a university of maryland residence hall. we're talking about bedbugs. >> yeah, and this isn't the first time this building in south campus commons has dealt with the creepy crawllies. kristin fisher live in college park. she describes the story. clothes in g

week earlier, cbs says the move was necessary to make sure there are enough instructional days in each school quarter but he says changing their travel plans is going to cost hundreds of dollars. i'm glad the strike is over but it seems like we're continuing to pay the cost of the strike. >> this sepias calendar released today makes up for all seven school days missed while teachers were on picket lines and here is how the majority of students will lose two days from winter vacation they will have to report to school on january 3rd and fourth and the school year is like thinned to include june 19th-21st and june 24th, roughly one-third of students will lose one week from fall break meeting school will be in session october 15th-19th and an additional school day on june 19th and the school calendar also adds more professional development time for teachers which includes six half days for students. these calendar changes are another example of decisions being made without respect to parents, families it's just insult to injury. this is what jean-claude brizard had to say in a statement:

the president. 46% of undecided voters in a cbs poll gave the win to romney to just 22% for mr. obama. nearly a third of the undecideds were undecided. romney's positive rating rose above 50% for the first time in this campaign in a reuters poll. the president's ratings stayed unchanged at 56%. romney stayed on the attack even though his positions were to be charitable and flatly untrue. here's some of what he said about his tax plan and the economy. >> romney: i'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. my plan is not to put in place any tax cut that will add to the deficit. my view is we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class but i'm not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high income people. we have 23 million people out of work. or stop look for work in this country. >> eliot: here's how the obama campaign responded to some of the claims. with an ad released this afternoon that relied on fact checkers. >> mitt romney has not laid out specifics for how he would pay for his tax cut. he says

from other news outlets pointing out that the video has been public for a little while. from cbs -- host: lets get back to the calls. mary, republican warned. caller -- caller: i would ask president obama what his plans are to solve the fiscal crisis. not a single democrat has approved his budget in congress. i want to know what his plans are for medicare. he has already stolen half of $1 trillion from that, which affects seniors. he has already taxed the middle- class. host: what would you ask mitt romney? caller: i am pretty sure i can see clearly what his plans are. he is going to help the small business to create jobs and work on the economy. i agree with what he wants to do. host: where are you calling from? caller: san antonio, texas. host: indiana, republican line, hello. caller: i would like to ask president obama y he thinks that it is not necessary to have a voter id for voting in this country when you need an identification for just about anything that is even minor, of minor importance, such as getting a checkbook, writing a check, getting a prescription filled, getti

as beard stick. he called frank stanton head of cbs news into the control room to see the stark disappearance of the candidates. he called ted rogers and said he was satisfied the way nixon looked. that's not the way the rest of the country saw it, when nixon started sweating through that beard stick. the next venue was nbc studios where we produce "hardball." wilson arrived with the kennedy brothers to figure out something was up. someone set the temperature to freezing. felt like a meat locker. jack said, what the hell is this? wilson remembers racing down to the basement looking for the air conditioning unit. there was a guy standing there that ted rogers put there for nixon and he said, don't let anybody change this pip said, get out of the way or i'm going to call the police. he immediately left and i changed the air conditioning back to normal. wilson understand the game and how it was going to be played. the candidates had their jobs to do, so did their handlers. he said his opponent, he said, he wanted to keep his job because of the screw-up that happened in the first de

to bring you in on this, kevin madison with the romney campaign, he was on cbs, he was asked about this tape. let me play it. >> we believe, as a campaign, i think governor romney believes what is most relevant is the president's policies and how they are affecting the economy today, how they are affecting people's bottom line, how they are affecting household incomes. >> does this show a priority list difference, perhaps some of the conservative commentators, chip, wanting to find their a ha moment to get back, i guess, that the 47% video of romney as opposed to what kevin madden says answered the campaign would like to talking about, the priorities getting this economy turned around? is there a divide within conservatives in the party on how to fight back? >> when you are running a campaign and there's other groups doing everything, always doing something else. kevson very smart, keeping it focused on jobs and the economy and the romney campaign. and i think the only a ha is going to matter today about 9:01 when the debate starts and these two guys are on the same stage together.

the cbs poll and the cmn instant polls and the yen consensus is not divided along partisan lines. overwhelmingly people saw the president lost that not because they thought governor romney's tax plan adds up, not because they want to turn medicare into a voucher, it was purely, as far as i am concerned, style and confidence. > >> rose: when the governor says, you know, the rich will pay the same share they have been paying or more, he is right abou th? >> well, that is very hard to answer. because he said that, he said that will be a defining principle of his tax plan but he also laid out a number of defining principles and he cannot rit matically, a rit matically define all of those principles. he can choose not to compromise on that and say under absolutely no circumstances will the shared tacks pay by the rich go down but he can't then also have the scale of ghuts rates that he wants, and so i think we just don't know whether that is the case. what we know is he has been very specific about a cut in rates that would benefit the top a lot and he then said i will find ways to of

: both candidates will meet again in a town hall style format october 16th. a cbs news poll found only 22% of people who watched the debate thought president obama won while 46% said mitt romney came out on top. president obama meanwhile returns to our area friday with campaign appearance on the campus of george mason university in fairfax. in the newsroom tom fitzgerald, fox 5 news. >> joining us now is major garrett, congressional correspondent with the national journal. thanks for coming in tonight, great to see you. you were at last night's debate. there is a story by a columnist today that thinks the reason why president obama may have had such an off night is because he hasn't engaged with the media much during his presidency, hasn't done a lot of press conferences but done a lot of perhaps softball interviews with magazines and the like. do you buy into that? you've covered him. >> the president has not done many press conferences lately, but that is not the same as a presidential debate. what president obama fell into last night is something of a historical pattern where incumb

defended him against things of that nature. by the way, i think -- he floored the cbs reporting by revealing he rejected the republican party platform and performed multiple same-sex weddings. he married some chicks in my office. i think he wanted the hot girl on girl. he is still a pig. >> the marriage and the wedding night happened at the same time in my office. >> i think he referred to the woman as a cigar-smoking lesbian. >> stephanie: yeah. >> so i'm not sure she was of the lipstick variety. >> stephanie: you never know. >> just saying. >> stephanie: it is stereotypical. >> have you ever smoked a cigar. >> stephanie: no. >> all right. >> stephanie: the lesbian daughter of the hong kong billionaire -- >> the one that offered the bounty for someone who would bring her around. >> stephanie: yeah. i think she has some other issues. after her extremely wealthy father put up a call for marriage solicitations, she said her inbox has been -- with men. >> it's raining men. >> stephanie: she actually has a long-time same-sex partner. i realized i have a really l

you think in the morning there is a conference call between abc, nbc and cbs and the "new york times" to decide what they are going to report on obama? >> don't put tblords my mouth. they know what the news of the day is and they choose to ignore it. the on time that they choose not to ignore it is when their access is threatened. you saw the media actually criticize president obama for not meeting with foreign leaders because they got snubbed for the ladies at the view. when they miss the access themselves that's when they complain. >> if you were ahead you wouldn't be having these arguments. >> i highly doubt it. martha: thanks so much, you guys. bill: bob is going to screen something like "coming up! romney screw up -- that is the kind of thing that cbs is not holding him accountable. both candidates will do the syrupy things but mitt romney is doing press conferences and obama has not been doing press conferences. you can look at the research on this. president obama has done more one-on-one said downs then press conferences. he likes to control the message and he would rather sit down with barbara walters and have her ask them what superpower he would like to have. host: fredericksburg, va., an airline for democrats -- -- on our line for democrats -- caller: i get tired of them talking about liberal, biased media. if there was, do you think they will allow george bush' to set p the war on allied? a lie? our country wanted to collapse, how many economic speculative to they have and the network? none of them do this? they talk about the kindness of mitt romney because he is a preacher -- printer or bishops at this church. isa pasture -- but pastor's not help his flock, you need to find another church. host: we will leave it there. guest: i don't think the news media has spent a lo

university "new york times" cbs news poll shows obama leading in ohio, florida and pennsylvania. it matches our own marist polling which shows the president leading in all nine swing states. joining me now, peter brown, the assistant director of the quinnipiac university polling institute. peter, i want to ask you about historically speaking have the polls been largely accurate? >> yes. the polls have been quite accurate over time. now, everybody likes to point to the 1948 election when the polls said that thomas dewey would win the election and he didn't. harry truman did. that was 40 years ago when polling was in its infancy. polls are very good at telling you what the situation is at the time they're taken, not a week from thursday, not two months from tomorrow. they're good for then. >> that snapshot, right. some of the gop complain the pollsters are oversampling democrats in the swing states. are they overestimating democratic turnout for november? can you explain how this works? >> sure. the key is that we and most of the other major polls do not weight by party. that is, there is no

of this race is a national disgrace. [cheers and applause] you know, we have a message for cnn, abc, cbs. you will not decide the outcome of this election. we, the people, will decide the outcome of this election. we live in a country that is getting harder to recognize every day. led by a president who mocks our values, be littles' our faith, and is threatened by our freedoms. you know it and i know it. barack obama is another washington, d.c. politician who will say what ever it takes to get elected. do not believe him. do not believe the slick campaign ads. do not believe his cheerleader friends and the media. do not let your friends believe it either. barack obama has not changed washington. he cannot change washington because barack obama is what is wrong with washington.
